Support for the unequivocal position [On banning all torture] was highest in Spain (82%), Great Britain (82%) and France (82%), followed by Mexico (73%), China (66%), the Palestinian territories (66%), Poland (62%), Indonesia (61%), and the Ukraine (59%). In five countries [only] either modest majorities or pluralities support a ban on all torture: Azerbaijan (54%), Egypt (54%), the United States (53%), Russia (49%), and Iran (43%).

I guess opinion polls have to be taken with a pinch of salt. But from what you hear from America, this one probably reflects the trend. If America wants to continue to lead, it better thinks again. The biggest threat isn't economic decline, but a trend like this one.
China 66%? I'm prepared to bet that every citizen denies that torture takes place here.
Dude, all they would have to do is strap the guy down and force him to listen to some F4 and a bit of S.H.E. and they would confess to anything you like . . . .
